Firefox Update – 2.0.0.1

I’ve been waiting for an update to Firefox 2.0, and the first one is here now – just run the update check on the Help menu. Thanks to Marc Orchant for the nudge.

The memory problems and stability have actually been so bad for me that I’m currently using Opera. As much as I love the open source nature of Firefox, and the extensible architecture, it had been crashing probably once a day on average, and after a day or two of use, was running the machine badly short of memory. I think part of the problem is my own habits – I tend to use open tabs to remind me of things that need to be posted, blogged, or things I just need to finish reading or looking at. If I can get into the habit of bookmarking things for those purposes, I might suffer less from the leaks. Still, the browser shouldn’t be leaking to the extent that it uses up all available memory within a day of use.

I’ll see how things to once the update finishes (downloading is slow at the moment), and decide from there if I’m sticking with Opera for now. I’d rather use Firefox, but Opera is pleasant to use, fast and reliable.
