This deserves a post of its own, not just a quick link in the sidebar – Nick Andronis built his own grandfather clock – entirely from wood. Well, ok, there’s a bit of string, a lead weight and a spring, too, but almost entirely wood.
I’m always amazed to see when people have built clocks or watches themselves, but they usually use some more appropriate material – making intricate cogs and gears from wood must take some real skill and concentration. He estimates that it took 3000 hours to build.
The quotes from people who have seen it are fun – they obviously didn’t quite grasp what they were looking at. Someone wanted to know where the batteries go. When a bicycle fell on the escapement mechanism, and broke three months of work, someone just commented “I’m sure you can buy another one”.
