Slimming World Quick Update – The REALLY Long Haul

Subtitle – Michael, please give my consultant one of your calculators.

Last night I was thumbing proudly through my book and glowing over my progress over the last five weeks, when I realised that something didn’t quite add up about my weight loss. It wasn’t until this morning when I was crunching numbers over my weetabix that I realised that a few weeks ago, when I had apparently lost five pounds, I had only lost three. So, the one and a half stone certificate I received last night was a bit overdue. My total weight loss is one stone five pounds, not a stone and a half. Dammit. This is going to be a long enough journey without taking two steps back for every three steps forwards.

I’m extra determined to get a good loss this week now. This weight has got to go!

Slimming World Week 5 – The Long Haul

Uncategorized, by

Back from another session at Slimming World armed with another bag of fruit after being Slimmer of the Week for a third time. With another 2lb gone, it takes my overall weight loss to 1 and a half stone (a.k.a. 21lb, a.k.a. 9kg). It looks like my weight loss has started to slow down from the big 6lb losses of my first few weeks to a still quite acceptable, steady, one or two pounds a week. Fair enough, I can live with that, as long as it’s a loss each week, I should still be on track for making a huge difference to my life within the year, and be heading towards my target within two.

This week I’m going to try to stick to the idea of having two thirds of my plate filled with veg (mainly salad) and keeping one third for lean meat or fish. Next week I might give the Success Express plan a try, which I’ll try to explain in more detail another time, when I’ve had more time to figure it out.

Bring on week six!

Video Squee: She Builds Quick Machines – Velvet Revolver

Uncategorized, by

The video for Velvet Revolver‘s first single from Libertad, She Builds Quick Machines, is up on YouTube for viewing. So, in order to provide objective and constructive feedback on this marvellous piece of work, I’ve watched it a few times. It’s a dirty job, my friends, but someone’s gotta do it.

As mentioned previously the director, Dean Karr, was planning something special for our top-hatted friend…

During the slowed down bridge of the song, Slash enters through the saloon style doors in super slow motion. He wears matching, black Les Paul’s. With his distinctive high-hat he creates a memorable image. The Baddies at first laugh, then slowly get up to stop him. Suddenly Slash (or his stunt double) will symmetrically begin spinning the guitars in a manner similar to a “Bruce Lee” nunchuk scene meets “V for Vendetta’s” classic knife fight. One of the bandit’s draws a knife, but is pinned against the wall as Slash flings one of the guitars through his midsection. The second bandit will fire shots at Slash, who deflects them all with his second guitar. He then lets that one rip through the air, putting the second guard out of commission, just in time to grab a third guitar off his back and hit his stinging solo, now in real time. This scene will require a little wicked postproduction, ultimately giving us one of his most memorable music video moments conceived to date!

Slash wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea, as he told VH1 in a recent interview:

“There was no way I was going to be doing that,” Slash said. “There’s certain things you do with guitars, and there’s a line where there’s cool and uncool — and that stepped over that line.”

Aw, Slash… well, at least there weren’t any dolphins or aircraft carriers involved this time, eh?

Even without the much-anticipated “Guitar Ninjaaa” scene, the video is still fantastic, the band look cool and there’s plenty to keep us squee addicts happy too.

Slash, of course, looking as cool and sexy as ever. He doesn’t need any theatrics to make an impact. Although he does kick a bit of arse, but not until after his solo. The man has priorities, you know.

Feeling lucky, punk? Looks like Scott had fun doing his Clint Eastwood bit.

But here’s the big squee moment of the vid. Yep, even Slash has lost out this time. Get a load of Cowboy Duff McKagan! Rowr!

Script Frenzy!

Uncategorized, by

For all the writers out there who love the madness of NaNoWriMo and can’t wait ’til November to have another go, why not stretch your muscles another way with this new challenge?

Script Frenzy is an international writing event in which participants attempt the creatively daring feat of writing an original, full-length screenplay—or stage play—in a single month. Spurred by a wild deadline and buoyed by a community of countless other writers, Script Frenzy participants can’t be bothered with self-doubt—or editing. They’re too busy writing by the seat of their pants, typing out beautiful, flawed stories that no one else could have dreamt up.

As part of a donation-funded nonprofit, Script Frenzy charges no fee to participate; there are also no valuable prizes awarded or “best” scripts singled out. Every writer who completes the goal of 20,000 words is victorious and awe-inspiring and will get a Script Frenzy Winner’s Certificate and web icon proclaiming this fact. Even those who fall short of the word goal will be applauded for making a heroic attempt. Really, you have nothing to lose—except that nagging feeling that there’s a script inside you that may never get out.

Sounds like fun! Got a gritty police drama eating away at you in there? What about a time travel tale? What about both? No, wait, that’s already been done.

Week 4 Weigh In

Uncategorized, by

A bit of a disappointment this week, with only a pound and a half gone. Still, that’s a total of one stone five pounds in four weeks, which isn’t bad, and I did get my Body Magic Silver, so it’s not all bad news. And I do have a strategy for the coming week… I’m sticking to Original for a while, because I reckon the starchy veg that’s free on Green aren’t doing me many favours, so time to pull down the menu I had planned and put together a new one.

And a new rule for the plan: What happens after group on Monday night STAYS after group on Monday night. ;)

Slimming World Week 4 – Body Magic

Uncategorized, by

Coming to the end of my first month on Slimming World, and startling just about everyone who knows me by actually sticking to it. My total weight loss so far stands at 17 and a half pounds, but I have another weigh-in tomorrow, so we’ll see what happens then. I’ve stopped predicting how much I’ll lose, because in truth I don’t know. All I can do is stick to the plan and just let the weight loss happen. At least I know it will, in its own time.

Before

Me, two weeks before starting.

Now

And here I am the other night, just over 3 weeks in.

It’s working, then.

Body Magic

One of the biggest changes in my habits is the increase in activity, and I must say that everything you’ve heard about exercise is true. Getting up and getting moving (especially going on my morning and afternoon break walks at work) makes me me feel good, and sitting on my arse for too long makes me feel lethargic and depressed. I’m still keeping any exercise I do really gentle, especially since going out during a recent spell of bad weather caused my sciatica to reappear. My activity has mainly been walking, shopping ;) (yes, it counts!) and, well, the inevitable gymnastics that follow Michael getting the guitar out and attempting to master a Slash riff (yes, that counts too). “Get in the bed! Get in the bed!”

It all gets written down and added, and tomorrow night I should be getting my Body Magic Bronze Certificate – yes, certificates again! I love ‘em!

Food Adventures

I figured since I’ll be doing this for a long, long, long time, I may as well have a little bit of fun trying out new foods and stuff I haven’t had in ages, and this week that has included…

  • Ostrich Ham – tastes like thinly cut steak. Beautiful.
  • Tilapia – a very tasty fish that has the advantage of being available in boneless fillets.
  • Orange – I haven’t eaten an orange in ages, but since I came home with the fruit basket after winning Slimmer of the Week again, I decided to put one in my fruit salad, yum.

However, I think something I have eaten must have had some funny side effect, after seeing this in town yesterday…

The subs! They're ALIVE!

Oh, come on. That’s as bad as eating cream cakes at the window of a Weight Watchers meeting. Wandering around town dressed as a sandwich?!? You swine! Then this creature gives me a booklet of vouchers for discounts on nothing but subs, not salads, just syn-laden subs. That’s just mean. What’s going to be waiting for me in town next weekend? A troupe of dancing cheeseburgers? *sigh*
