Slimming World Week 3 – The best things in life are Free

Uncategorized, by

The adventure continues! It’s going really well, and feeling less like a diet and more like an exploration of how nice real food is, compared to the processed crap I used to live on. We’re both eating more fresh veg than ever before, and I’ve been happily munching on fruit at work.

Some experiments with free food haven’t worked out so well – I bought a tub of quark, and attempted to turn it into a palatable crispbread topping, but after a few attempts I gave up and threw the whole lot in the bin. Quark is meant to be a good substitute for various things – the recipe section in Lifeline Online suggests it as a base for a dip, or as an ingredient in a low-syn cheesecake recipe. I’ll maybe try using it again when I have a recipe to follow, rather than relying on my spirit of devil-may-care experimentation. Never mind, there’s still plenty of delicious free food available, and some of my favourites are…

Superfree

These are the foods that are free on both original and green days.

  • Tomato – I can’t get enough of tomatoes! Particularly if lightly cooked on The George or roasted.
  • Asparagus – cooked in ‘furiously boiling water’ according to Good Food Magazine for just a couple of minutes and then drained. Lovely. Michael likes asparagus too, because it makes asparagusic acid.
  • Bananas – easy quick snack and good for livening up breakfast.
  • Plums – Here’s a quick funny story about plums – The other night Michael and I were sat up in bed. I was reading Slimming World Magazine and Michael was reading Calculator Geeks’ Weekly. As we were quietly geeking out over our respective obsessions, we noticed a round object roll into the room. Michael asked, “What’s that?” “Um, it’s a plum… Sweeney!” The cat had decided to raid the fruit bowl for something to play with.
She’s still getting used to the presence of fruit.
  • Soy Sauce – I’m hooked on the stuff. Fortunately I’ve found a store online that does it by the litre.

Original

Pretty much any lean cut of meat and fish are free on Original.

  • Tuna – fresh from the fish counter, done on The George, served with salad. So much nicer than the tinned stuff. The cat thought so too.
  • Duck – it was my birthday yesterday, and to celebrate I had a slightly amended version of Peking Duck, without the pancakes, but with lots of soy sauce. I told you I was hooked on the stuff.
  • Meatballs – see last week’s post for the recipe.
  • Sardines, Pilchards etc – any tinned fish in brine, spring water or tomato is free. That’s lunch sorted, then.
  • Lean Mince – more expensive, but worth it and good for curry, chilli etc etc.

Green

Perfect for days when I’m in the mood for something nice and stodgy.

  • Chips – yes, chips. Sort of. Potatoes, cut into chip shape, parboiled and then roasted in Fry Light.
  • Mushy Peas – chips and mushy peas, does it get much better than that?
  • Baked Beans – green days are good for farting.
  • Couscous – so easy to make an it goes a long, long way. Last batch I made lasted for three meals.
  • Rice – so versatile. Good job, we’ve got a ton of the stuff.

With all of that, it’s hardly surprising I haven’t used many syns, I haven’t needed them.

Tonight I’ve made the legendary ‘Syn Free Quiche’. This is made by chopping up loads of free veggies, mixing up eggs, very low fat cottage cheese and parsley, and baking until set. The first one was for today, and had meat in it, but I made another one straight after which contains just free veg, so it can be used on either Original or Green. That’ll do for lunch tomorrow, which is weighing-in day.

I’m hoping for another good loss this week, but I couldn’t guess how much it might be. I’m a pound and a half away from another certificate and sticker, so I’m hoping I’ve done at least that. Fingers crossed for tomorrow, then.

Week 2 Weigh-In

Uncategorized, by

Another 6lb gone! That’s twelve and a half pounds since I started two weeks ago. I won Slimmer of the Week which means I now have a ton of fruit to eat, so it’s fruit salad for dinner tonight. And, believe it or not, that’s what I actually want. It’s a far cry from the last time I did Slimming World when I used to go to the chippy after the meeting…

Life is changing. My body is changing. It feels fantastic!
