Yet More Monochrome Meddling
A quick snap of a metal teapot on the rough wooden table at the Tea Gardens, at the Grand Western Canal (now unfortunately closed for the season, to re-open at Easter) gave me another chance to play with monochrome. Reducing with the Channel Mixer, in the usual way, using The GIMP, then warming the tone up to a nice golden brown shade:
I’m really quite pleased with this one. The Nikon 55-200 VR DX lens has some heavy vignetting, but a lot of the time, it gives quite a nice effect, and I like how it’s worked here.

Thanks Peter. Actually, I think Curves is one thing GIMP does better than anything else. The curves adjust window can be resized as big as you want, and has the histogram displayed behind the curve, so you can see where your brightest and darkest shades are.
I mainly boosted the contrast, which darkened the darker areas, loosing a lot of detail. It seemed to work better that way, for me, anyway. This might be a good one to come back to after I’ve played with a few more ideas on other shots.
I like this texture study, thanks.
I was wondering if GIMP gives you any way of lifting up the shadow detail? I think there’s probably a little more to be had from these, even though I’m looking on a crap screen today. (In Photoshop it’s called Curves.)
