Windows users can install EmacsW32, which provides extensions to make Emacs play well with Windows, including mapping HOME ("~") to "C:\Documents and Settings\username".

Thanks, Claudine, I'd not heard of that. Looks like an interesting project - as they say, probably a lot of it is stuff that really should be rolled into the Windows version of Emacs, but Emacs development isn't exactly a rush job.

They've not managed to make it much easier to pick the right download, though - us Windows users just want a big DOWNLOAD THIS button at the top of the screen, not a decision to make ;) Looks like it's the "Emacs-22-CvsP060314-EmacsW32-1.00.exe" file most people would probably want.

Good point. I've been using the stable version from the Emacs-21.3 directory - I don't know how reliable the CVS version is.

Just wanted to help the next geek who stumbles by and tries to install planner. I got the subject error message when I followed the instructions on this page. What the instructions leave out, I believe, is creating an initial planner.

Thanks, Greg. I'm sure I remember getting that one myself at some point, but I think I'd been doing something silly by moving files around without backing up, and I can't remember how I got around it in the end.

I can't remember if it gets created by default or not - probably not, come to think of it, because it's only for your personal customising.

I don't think .emacs gets mentioned in the tutorial, but once you've got your 'home' set up, just C-x C-f to open a file, and enter "~/.emacs" - that sould create it if it's not already there.

If you don't create a 'HOME' environment variable, watch for the mess Gnu Emacs makes all over the root of C:. XEmacs is a bit tidier - it makes its mess in your user folder under Documents and Settings. Unfortunately, not only does planner-multi need a bit of fixing to work with XEmacs, but Remember does too, and I couldn't fix that - I'm back with the Gnu.

Well, I tried to set it up, but, alas, there is no ".emacs" file in my home folder. Is this file created automatically by Emacs? Or do I have to create it myself?

Yes, I know the answer: "Read the tutorial and the manual!"

Okay, okay, I'll do it.

The .emacs file is something you have to create first :) All your customizations go there. Hmmm. I am not sure but I think I mentioned that in my old blog.

By the way, I am currently applying some of the Moleskine hacks you shared here :)

Glad we've inspired you with the Moleskines - you've certainly inspired me with Emacs. Sacha pointed me to your blog recently, and it got me back to Emacs again, using PlannerMode.

Emacs Planner Mode is really neat. I haven't tried it with Muse though. Still using the older Planner version. I guess I might be going back to Emacs soon enough laughs Scite sometimes crashes on me while I write down the code for the exercises. I have seen the Ruby mode for Emacs and I am using it already :D

Keep on sharing the hacks you've been doing :)
