Michael’s Scribbles: 2008-04-06
I did these ‘scribbles’ posts for a couple of days, then nothing. I didn’t stop typing them up – I just didn’t write any in the first place. Now that I am scribbling again, I’m doing it in a different place. I’m experimenting with using my Mini Filofax again. It’s a bit of a trade-off, as these things so often are. The area of paper to write on is quite a bit smaller than in a Moleskine, so I’m using a lot more pages. On the other hand, though, the paper is better, and I can have separate sections for other things. I’m not keeping a real GTD system at the moment, but it’s still useful to have some lists, like a wish list and a shopping list.
It’s quite possible I’ll be back to the Moleskine within a day or two, or that I’ll try to stretch my jeans pocket to cram in my Pocket Filofax. I have a worrying amount of fun trying them, though, and that’s the important thing.
I use a slimline standard size filofax, and find it’s great compromise between portability and paper size. The mini is just too small, and the moleskines are nice but a bit too bulky for every day use.
As soon as it doesn’t fit in a pocket, I have to carry it separately. Once I have to do that, it could be any size. The mini is quite pocketable. The Pocket can just about fit in a pocket, but it’s a stretch.
The pocket Moleskine is quite a good size – fits reasonably easily into a pocket, but still has a reasonably good area of paper.
Maybe I just need a bigger bag, then I could carry my A5 Filofax around in that…
For a useful day bag, try the Eagle Creek ES Cargo Duffel in small size – http://www.eaglecreek.com/bags_luggage/duffels/ES-Cargo-Duffel—Small-20171/
I have one from some years ago – a bit smaller than the current one, I think – great piece of kit, and they honour their guarantee, too. Got mine from a Rohan shop. Rohan and Itchy Feet still stock Eagle Creek but not the whole range.
It’s a Tardis bag; not too big outside, collapses down small, yet carries an amazing amount.
The main criteria for any bag is that it’s got to be able to carry around a Nikon D40 and spare lens, so anything that isn’t a camera bag is pretty much out.
I’m using a Lowepro Slingshot 200 at the moment, which is very good, but doesn’t really have space for an A5 Filofax. It’s more convenient to have the notebook in my pocket anyway, so I’d really rather avoid stepping up to anything too big.
