After buying myself a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX550 » [ | : UK, US], I decided I needed the smallest bag I could find to fit it in. I wanted something that I could attach to my belt to keep the camera handy when I didn’t take an extra bag. It isn’t easy fitting it in my pocket, alongside phone, iPod Touch, wallet, keys, change, microfibre cloths, etc. That means something has to go on the belt, at the risk of making it look like Batman has really let himself go. (I already have pouches for knife and torch on there – I gave up on style long ago.)

We went along to one of our local camera shops, J&A Cameras, and I tried a couple out. I ended up with a Lowepro Apex 10AW » [ | : UK, US].

It’s a bit thicker than I’d like, but only just tall enough, which was more important to me. Very importantly, it has a belt loop that can be opened to put it on or take it off without having to remove my belt. I don’t want to have to get undressed when I decide to attach my camera pouch to me.

There’s even a tiny loop at the top, so it can be quickly clipped to a carabiner-type-thing I always keep attached to a belt loop. I don’t really have much need for the extra compartments inside for batteries and cards, but they don’t hurt.

One feature I’ve had on other Lowepro bags, but never seen on one this small – the AW at the end is for All Weather. That’s Lowepro’s term for bags with a little fold-away ‘pac-a-mac’, that can be pulled out to wrap over the bag in heavy rain.

The normal zips are fairly water-resistant, so it’s rarely needed, but always nice to know it’s there.
