Apple Stuff

Yes, I love my Apple stuff. I use a MacBook, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, Oh, and AirPods. Enough stuff to put ‘em all in a little folder of their own here.

I’ll cover individual items separately (sidebar or menu), but a lot of the value in Apple’s stuff comes from using them together, along with the services, mainly iCloud, that connect them.

Some don’t like the closed nature of the Apple ecosystem. I’ve used Windows, and I’ve used Linux, including Slackware in the early days, and SuSE was my main OS for a couple of years. I also used to reinstall Windows and defrag my hard drive for entertainment. Now I want to use my computer and devices, I don’t want them to be the hobby.

Some examples of how iCloud connects different devices to make them better together…

  • Copy and paste between devices. I can copy something on my iPhone, and paste it on my Mac.
  • My MacBook can use the main camera on my iPhone as a webcam. With a little Belkin clip to mount the phone on top of the screen, I have a better camera than could ever fit in a laptop screen.
  • I can use my iPad as an extra screen for my MacBook. Or, through the Apple TV, my TV.
  • I can control my iPad from my MacBook, using the built-in keyboard and trackpad, or any keyboard and mouse/trackpad connected to the Mac.
  • Add a reminder on my iPhone, it’s there on my Mac seconds later. And the other way, of course, and on my iPad and watch.
  • Make a calendar entry on my Mac. Or maybe my wife does in our shared calendar. Get in the car, and the car already knows where I’m going, because it has CarPlay.
