PigPog

Quite new to me, I've had this bag for a couple of months now, so consider this more 'early impressions' than 'long term test'.

It's a really unique bag, and does one trick that nothing else I've ever seen can do - a 6l bag, a tiny sling, can carry my MacBook.

My Impossible Want

I'd realised that what I wanted from a bag was impossible. I wanted a small light sling bag for short walks, shopping, etc. But I also needed to be able to take my MacBook to the office for work, along with a water bottle and sometimes a tripod. Add that lot up, and no small and light bag can carry it all.

I considered a smaller 'tech pouch' bag to go inside a bigger bag, but then the smaller bag would probably be less comfortable, and the bigger bag would be awkward to get at my most used stuff - swing backpack around, open it, pull smaller bag out, open that. That's going to stop me taking photos - too much friction.

The Impossible Sling Bag

Then I saw what I assumed as a somewhat silly listing error on Wex. They were claiming that this tiny sling bag could carry up to a 16" laptop. Clearly impossible. But the wording seemed fairly specific. I went to look at Wandrd's own site to see what was going on. And the thing is, it can. Sort of.

There's a full-width pocket in the back of the bag, where it sits closest to your body, with a full-length zip along the top. And you can use it that way, to fit something thin and wide. But you can also undo a matching zip along the bottom, and there's some extra bag that can then be pushed out of the bottom of the bag, making that pocket extra tall.

And you can also use it like that, with a bit of extra height - it would work for an iPad, for example, but it's not very protected. And it's still not tall enough for a MacBook. So, you stick the MacBook (other laptops are available) in the pocket, sideways on, so it's taller, with one side in the bottom of the extended pocket. The other side sticks out of the top of the pocket. And there's a strap that goes over the top and pulls tight to hold it in place.

But that's not quite what you're supposed to do, at least, not entirely. I mean, it is, but you put the MacBook inside a sleeve first, to give it some protection. Now it has padding, and is sort of inside your little sling bag. Wandrd just happen to make sleeves that fit well, which is what I got, but they do say other sleeves should fit, as long as they're tight around the laptop.

Compared to Expectations

I bought it, though I had some doubts. It didn't look like it would be comfortable when fully loaded. And it looked like loading it up with my MacBook would be an annoying hassle. Well, it's way more comfortable than I thought. A good backpack would definitely win, but it's not at all bad, and very comfortable with a lighter load, which is what I wanted. And while I still find putting the MacBook in the sling to be a bit of a pain, it's not as bad as I thought it might be. And Wandrd's laptop sleeve is actually pretty useful. My MacBook almost entirely lives in it now, and it even doubles up as a little stand, raising screen and angling keyboard for use.

For Basic Carry

As a bag for just having some stuff handy when I'm out for a walk or shopping, it's great. Small and light, and very comfortable. It limits what I can carry a bit, but that's what i wanted. I can't just carry all my lenses 'just in case', it forces me to make choices. If I want to take a small second lens, that's fine. Maybe a couple if they're small enough. But if I want a second bigger lens, like the 24-240 zoom, I'm going to need to decide what to sacrifice to make space. Do I really need that USB charger plug? Am I really going to use that little phone tripod? Probably not, leave them behind.

For Heavier Carry

It takes more work to fully pack it out than with my previous bag (Peak Design Everyday Messenger). But so far, at least, it doesn't feel like it's too much more.

It's surprisingly comfortable even when fully loaded - the big padded back section that seems a bit much on such a small bag makes it work quite well with stuff strapped all over it, weighing it down.

Even when it's fully loaded, I can't carry a lot. If I really needed several lenses, I'd have to take a different bag or a second bag.

But with one or two Peak Design Packable Tote bags inside, it's very handy to just grab for a walk or to go to the shops. I know I'll have my camera, a couple of cables I might need, and bags to carry any shopping I buy. And a couple of minutes prep is all that's needed to add my MacBook and a bottle of water to take to the office.
